Do you have lips you feel can benefit from a complete makeover? Does their thinning appearance make you look bone-thin, detracting from your full personality? Don’t look frail, thin and weak; your lips are instrumental cues to your health. When they’re soft, plump and round, you look kissable. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, the lips are the amplifier for your voice. When you talk, you want people to gravitate to your message. With fuller, thicker lips that resemble those of your youth, you can command the room. Juvederm Volbella Carlsbad can help others see your true beauty, the beauty of your inner self and what you believe.
This injectable helps temporarily volumnize the lips and smooth out any fine lines on or around the lips. It consists of a polysaccharide (sugar) that is from the body called hyaluronic acid (HA). HA’s role is to deliver nutrients as well as moisturize and soften the skin. Delivered with the anesthetic lidocaine, the injection is nearly painless, though this is subject to your interpretation of needles.*
Juvederm Volbella Carlsbad is intended for treatment of the perioral region, or skin area around the mouth and lips. It is thinner than Vollure for the nasolabial folds and Voluma for the cheeks. However, this thinness lends it incredible creative control in smoothing out lips. Too thick a gel could create a bumpy texture that is unnatural, which is one major reason why collagen-based fillers do not go in the lips (think Radiesse).
If you are looking to boost your pout, this HA filler may give you the enhancement you desire. However, certain conditions rule out your eligibility for the treatment. If you have a history of anaphylaxis, you may need to abstain from this treatment. While hyaluronic acid is found in the body, the administration or rapid addition of the product may trigger the body into thinking it must fend off an attack. That can make injection of Juvederm Volbella Carlsbad dangerous, so check with our medical team if you have history of severe allergic reactions. If you have a pigmentation disorder or a history of excessive scarring, we may not recommend this treatment due to potential for unwanted side effects.
Before you get Juvederm Volbella Carlsbad, you’ll want to limit or avoid any unnecessarily blood thinners such as ibuprofen or aspirin. Taking blood thinners may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site, something you’ll want to avoid if you’re heading back to work after your injection.
After you receive a hyaluronic acid injection, you should minimize any stress on the body that can trigger a more inflammatory response toward the hyaluronic acid. That means you should minimize strenuous exercise and exposure to extensive sun or heat the day after injection.
If you plan on doubling up on cosmetic treatments, tell us which ones. In this sense, we advise you stick to a med spa where the staff are familiar with your full cosmetic history. With a record, we can tell if your chemical peels (we offer Perfect Peel and SkinMedica Rejuvenize, for example) might conflict with the filler. Combining certain procedures can create more inflammation at the treatment site, something we want to avoid.
If you’re curious how this specific HA product worked out in a study, here are the facts:
In a study of 168 subjects receiving Juvederm Volbella XC, 56 subjects received treatment with another dermal filler. Every subject was permitted a touch-up one month after initial treatment. At the one-year mark, subjects could get a repeat injection.
Subjects noted their side effects in diaries and in doctor visits. To measure Volbella’s effectiveness, a four-point scale measuring the product’s ability to smooth lines are the mouth was used, as well as a five-point to measure overall cosmetic enhancement.
The results were that a majority of subjects reported at least a one-point improvement in lip fullness 3 months after treatment (80%) and 1 year after treatment (62%). 1 year after treatment, 60% of patients had at least a one-point improvement in perioral lines. Overall, subjects witnessed improved appearance at 3 months (93%) and 1 year after (59%).
According to the same study cited earlier, most side effects went away within 30 days and were mild or moderate. The most common side effect was any side effect, with swelling being common. Tenderness, bruising, firmness, lumps/bumps, redness and pain are also common. Less common, though notable, is discoloration and itching. Last but not least is dryness, with only a 5% expected likelihood of experiencing this side effect.*
Like with our other Juvederm fillers, you can expect a short process (20 to 30 mins, max) during which the injector does a first injection and waits. This allows the lidocaine to take action and creates a numbing effect. After that initial injection, the injector will administer the rest in small amounts. She may massage the area to help distribute the product evenly. Ice may be applied to minimize swelling.
The lips are a sensitive region, so you can expect some discomfort. Aesthetic Laser Specialists takes great strides to made you feel comfortable and at ease throughout the procedure. If at any time the pain becomes too unbearable or you want to pause, we can do so. If you’re extra sensitive to pain, we can anesthetize the area with a topical numbing agent in addition to the injected lidocaine.
If you like your results with Juvederm Volbella Carlsbad, you can get an injection every year. Results last for a year in the majority of patients. However, you can get a touch-up about a month after your injection.
